His Story March 23,2003
The Iraq was shooting and rain began to fall. SFC Javier Camacho, 35, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, the platoon sergeant for B Troop's 4th Platoon, was commanding a tank half a mile behind Small's at the time the two tanks were knocked out. "Somebody's got hit," said his gunner, SGT. Jeremiah Gallegos. Within a couple of minutes,Camacho's tank came to the seen. Small's tank was burning and burning. Three of the soldiers out of four made it out and asked Camacho for help in rescuing Small. "When they told me he was still there, my heart stopped," Camacho said. "He's not one of my soldiers, but I could just imagine buring to death in a tank. I wouldn't leave nobody like that." Bravely, Camacho went to the tank. Iraq was shooting and everything. Small's hatch was jammed. Meanwhile, fighting continued around them. It was hard to tell which bullets we fired by the enemy. Finally the hatched popped open, and they pulled small out. "When he came out of the tank he was hyperventilating," Camacho said. Camacho and Newby brought Small to a ditch next to the road. RPG bounced off the road in front of Camacho's tank. "All you could hear was the sound of the bullets going by," Camacho said. "It was an exciting night." Looking back, Camacho said he didn't care about the dangers inherent in what he did. "I didn't think about being afraid," Camacho said. "I just wanted to get that kid out." The two tanks were total losses - the first Abrams tanks ever destroyed in thier 20 years of service by enemy fire. "But that didn't matter Camacho risk his life to save Small when he didn't even know him. Thats a true American Soldier." ~*~ChinchiWonderland~*~ Below is a picture of Javier recieving his award for saving Small's Life!!! | |
